Bye Bye Winter

The final days of winter are with us, the sun is out and warmth returned. We’ve had a busy few winter months despite the cold. If you haven’t been out on your bike , now is the time to dust it off and oil the chain.

For those over 60 and who want to cycle to keep fit:
As we age we gain fat from lower insulin sensitivity and we loose muscle mass – particularly our fast twitch muscles and bone density. We are at higher risk of heart disease , cancer and diabetes. Riding your bike regularly is more important then ever to ward of ill health. According to Cyclefit (cycle fit.co.uk) we need to increase our calcium intake (think dairy) add some resistance training to our routine and do more slower endurance riding rather than fast/hard riding. Remember – if you get stiff hips/knees or a fluctuating heart after cycling it’s time to see your GP for a heath check (Information from: Cycling Feb 2023 UK edition).
